December 2007 Update
This month, we continue our analysis of the more than 1,200 responses to the 2006 citywide parks and recreation survey. The margin of error is less than 3% and contains a good sampling of all NPUs and Council Districts. The results provide an interesting snapshot into residents’ perception of our city and what they see as the most important needs for creating a world-class park system in the City of Atlanta.
RESIDENTS NEEDS
First, residents were asked about their recreation needs. The top five responses are:
- Walking & biking trails (84% of households)
- Large Community Parks (75%)
- Small Neighborhood Parks (75%)
- Nature center and trails (70%)
- Park shelters and picnic areas (66%)
UNMET NEEDS
Next, residents were asked which of these needs are not being met by the City’s park system. The top five responses were:
- Walking and biking trails (55% of households)
- Nature center and trails (54%)
- Park Shelters and picnic areas (41%)
- Community Gardens (41%)
- Indoor fitness and exercise trails (40%
MOST IMPORTANT PARK FACILITIES
Residents were given a list of 25 parks and recreation facilities* and were asked to indicate which four were most important to their household. The most popular responses were:
- Walking and biking trails (49% of households)
- Small neighborhood parks (35%)
- Large community parks (33%)
* NOTE: A special events facility was not among the 25 facilities that respondents could choose from. In separate questions, Special Events and Festivals were by far the respondent’s most important recreation program (37%) and the program in which they most frequently participated (31%)
Atlanta Project Greenspace public input opportunities:
Please visit the project website www.atlantaprojectgreenspace.com for more information, copies of earlier newsletters, and comment forms. A draft report will be made available on the project website, presented at a public meeting, and brought before NPUs. After incorporating the additional public input from these meetings, the plan would be brought to Council for consideration.
